Today’s post is just a quick round-up of some things related to Māori literature that I wanted to highlight! I’ve always liked the idea of regular posts of this nature, but I also know from experience that I kind of hate the need to ‘keep on top of things’, the pressure to regularly produce a newsletter-style list of recent things.
So, these posts will definitely not be regular - but I will do them when I feel the need to!
Also just to be clear, I will definitely have little periods of high activity on this blog. I’m a teacher, so my free time can come in chunks, and I really enjoy using my holidays to tend to things like this blog! I’ll try not to clog your inbox, but yeah, just a heads up haha.
And while I’m here, I also just want to let newer subscribers know that there is no paywalled content on this blog - every post is made available to all subscribers. I hugely appreciate paid subscribers, but if you aren’t able/don’t want to pay for a subscription, know that you won’t be missing out on anything!
AWA WAHINE RIMA | ISSUE 5
Awa Wahine - a magazine dedicated to wāhine Māori and Pacific artists and writers - released their fifth issue a while back. Each issue is packed with great stuff, but I’m particularly excited to see more writing by Jorja Heta - who was featured in the first issue of PŪHIA - and I love the cover art by Brooklyn-based oil painter Terina Sciarrotta.
PUKAPUKA MĀORI O TE TAU 2023-2024
The Māori Literature Trust recently put together this excellent resource: a catalogue of pukapuka by Māori authors released over the past year. They’ve broken it down into separate categories:
Books for Tamariki & Rangatahi
Fiction
Non-Fiction
Illustrated Non-Fiction
Poetry
Journals & Anthologies
HEADLAND ISSUE 21: KAITUHI MĀORI | MĀORI WRITERS
Headland literary journal recently published an issue dedicated to Māori writers, and it’s a hell of a lineup, featuring Briar Wood, Ariana Tikao, Emma Hislop, Steph Matuku, Stacia Haitana, A M Peihopa, Nicole Titihuia Hawkins, Shannon Campbell, Tara Leckie, Vanessa Ellingham, Nicola Andrews, Tōrea Scott-Fyfe, Miriama Gemmell, Kiri Piahana-Wong, and Tru Paraha.
SYMPOSIA MAGAZINE ISSUE 02
Symposia Magazine is a relatively new journal for emerging poets, and they recently dropped their second issue. I just love the design and formatting of everything they release, and Issue 02 happens to feature a couple of my favourite contemporary Māori poets: Tessa Keenan and Jackson McCarthy.
Check out their poems (and the rest of the issue) here!
AUP NEW POETS 10
Auckland University Press recently released the latest volume of their AUP New Poets series, and it also features Tessa Keenan! If you’re not familiar with the AUP New Poets thing, each volume consists of three poetry chapbooks - so they feel like something between a typical lit journal and a full single-author publication.
Tessa’s chapbook is called Pukapuka mapi / Atlas - you can pick up a copy here!
Have I missed anything? Let me know in the comments!
Thank you for sharing!
